Buena Vista - Fog Slams Flowering Plum II, 2015
30 x 22 inches acrylic watercolor and graphite on stonehenge paper

For his latest series of watercolors on stonehenge paper, John Warren Travis painted onsite at Buena Vista Park, a former cemetery in what is now San Francisco’s Haight/Ashbury neighborhood. Travis pares down each park landscape into halos of color, fog, light and line work that captures the drama and mystery of this unique place and its scenery. There is an element of intimacy and meditation in these watercolors that emanates Buena Vista Park’s storied history over the span of four seasons. Travis' lines allude to the the shifting perspectives of tree limbs, branches, and leaves. He received his MFA at Stanford in 1967, and is a retired Professor Emeritus from the Department of Drama, University of California at Berkeley where he taught Costume Design and Costume History. He has won numerous prestigious awards for costume and theatre design and has translated his love of line, movement, and drama into his paintings for the last 15 years.
