Do You Remember Her Name?
9 1/4 x 6 3/4 inches acrylic paint on found paper 2015
San Francisco artist Jenny Sharaf, who spent her formative years in Los Angeles, uses magazine images from the 1970s and applies vivid acrylic paint patterns to the surface, creating an interesting statement about California culture and the fabrication of the quintessential beach babe. Her use of beautiful women in carefree, seductive poses questions traditional masculine desire and objectification. This idea of picture-perfect women as false advertisement of the everyday California woman, is a notion Sharaf deconstructs with her strategic paint placement. This particular image was torn from a 1970s Playboy magazine.
