Somebody Groovy
12 x 9 inches acrylic paint on found paper 2015

San Francisco artist Jenny Sharaf, who spent her formative years in Los Angeles, uses magazine images from the 1960s and 70s and applies vivid acrylic paint patterns to the surface. Sharaf mines myths of the American West and California, in particular. Her focus on the western ideals (both body and environment) reflects the heat and vibrations of our culture and its mythology. The Western Myth's embodiment of warmth and searing light are pipedreams of a carefree life that so many associate with the golden state. Sharaf creates a psychedelic experience of what California is, but also announce its darker and less romantic side of the female body and climate change.
