Thought/Action (Gainsborough) 2.12
18.25 x 14.75, gouache on vintage book page
California artist Leigh Wells constructs mixed media and collage-drawings using found images or elements. Wells' Thought/Action series uses a vintage Thomas Gainsborough monograph which portrays the British royalty and aristocracy of the 18th century as it wished to be seen. Wells Interacts with these vintage plates by inserting patterned layers of paint allowing the artist to have a dialogue with ideas of class and society of the past. Wells lives and works in the Bay Area and her collage and mixed media works are often featured in the New York Times.
