Blue Maui, 2016
40 x 45 inches, acrylic on linen
Bay Area artist Stephen Giannetti's spray patterns lend themselves to the blurring of woven color fields. He paints a fractured space that is conceived by its process; a contemporary, incremental, and measured accumulation of authentic “mark making.” His paintings have evolved to be comprised of eight layers equally, each of which is a binary grid of same-sized circles resulting in a fracturing of light. The circle enjoys references to the cell, the Ben-Day dot, and the pixel. Think: Pointillism under magnification. His dazzling and meditative visual patterns are also closely aligned to the Light and Space artists of the 1960s such as James Turrell, Robert Irwin, Helen Pashgian and Dan Flavin.
Giannetti has exhibited extensively with solo and group exhibitions on the West Coast including San Francisco, Sacramento, Los Angeles, and in Asia. He lives and works in Davis, CA.
